Soft Armor, For Dad

Screen printed text on newsprint, Dad's coat

What am I looking at?

Underwear, 4 (out of 14) pairs to be exact. Each part of the piece has been decorated to represent a relationship I’ve had, in which I’ve at least kissed the other person.

A little weird, but okay.

Well, it’s a narrative. I’m trying to start a conversation, or at least an acknowledgment of the intricacies of relationships from a female perspective. More specifically, creating a space of sex positivity, in addition to acknowledging the unacceptable commonality of sexual harassment.

This isn’t a revenge project.

I didn’t create this piece because these people ‘did me wrong.’ I made it as a cathartic and mediative project to try and sort through my own shit.

Maybe some of you’ve been pressured by a male friend. Or have kissed a girl that now has a child. Or maybe like a boy who probably doesn’t like you back. Maybe you also had a brief tinder dating stint that you definitely could’ve ended in a better way.

What’re the lines and letters near the waistbands?

It’s names, hang-man style. Some people deserve anonymity, some people do not.

Why underwear?

For me, underwear has always been instinctually feminine. It’s personal and intimate but (hopefully) everyone’s got them. It’s relatable. It was important to me to keep the underwear for this project relatively modest because this isn’t erotic or overtly sexual. The experiences I chose to depict weren’t extravagant occurrences. In a society that sexualizes women from a young age while simultaneously chastising them for exploring and learning on their own, the piece is attempting to combat that by taking the most basic step: talking about it.

Why are they different sizes?

Well, I’m a college art student so I’ll take whatever the Target bargain bin can offer me. That being said, I definitely could’ve made a harder effort to purchase similarly sized pieces. I made the conscious decision to ‘run with’ the size difference because the experiences depicted aren’t limited to a certain ‘type’ of woman.

Talk about it.

Gawk.

Maybe one story will remind you of someone.

Enjoy the story.

It’s underwear for God’s sake, some of it’s supposed to be kind of funny (‘Congrats you made me feel like a piece of meat’) and there are some moments of seriousness too (‘Jake’).
